The Kennet Valley Park site covers
over 910 hectares (2,250 acres). It is located north of the M4
and adjacent to the Reading-Basingstoke and Reading-Theale-Newbury
railway lines, south-west of Reading.About one fifth of the site
will be developed. The rest will remain as meadows, woodland
and open water.
The area between the Kennet and Avon Canal and
the M4 is a degraded landscape as a result of intensive mineral
excavations over a number of years. Some mineral voids have
been landfilled whilst other areas have been restored as lakes.
The lakes are used for a variety of recreational purposes including
sailing, water-skiing and angling.
By comparison, the water meadows to the north
of the Kennet and Avon Canal have remained largely undisturbed.
As part of PRUPIM's proposals, this area will be protected
from development and managed in the long-term as both an ecological
and recreational resource.
